Endowed with favorable topography with fruitful orchards and immense rice fields; the Mekong Delta (or the Western region) is an ideal destination for tourists both at home and abroad to commune with nature after a series of days of hard working in noisy urban areas.
Not owning breathtaking and splendid beauty, the Mekong Delta draws the attention of a number of tourists by the sweet appearance and the tranquility. A plus point of this region is the hospitality and friendliness of local people which really enchants a lot of tourists.
The full name is the Southwest region but often referred to as the West region or Mekong Delta. The area includes 12 provinces and one city directly under the central authority. They are An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre and Ca Mau, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, Vinh Long and Can Tho.
Means of transport for Mekong Delta trip
The largest airport of the Mekong Delta is placed at the Can Tho international airport. In order to go to the Mekong Delta, you can take a flight to Can Tho airport and move from the airport to other provinces.
From Ho Chi Minh city, you can come to Mien Tay station (the Western bus station) located at 395 Kinh Duong Vuong, An Lac Ward, Binh Tan District; and then buy a bus ticket to go to Western provinces.
If taking the starting point in Ho Chi Minh city; besides bus, you can choose to travel by motorcycle. The reason is that moving by motorcycle will bring some advantages of arranging the itinerary; time for taking a rest; avoiding the waste of time and missing beautiful places during the journey.
Ideal time for traveling in the Mekong Delta
The Western region with the sunny climate and mild weather all the year round; it seems that tourists can come to visit the Mekong Delta at all times. In each season, the Mekong Delta has different and unique characteristics.
As usual, in the summer (around June, July and August) is the ripe fruit season in the region. For this reason, this period of time is ideal for those who would like to explore verdant orchards. Some famous sites of orchards are Cai Be, Vinh Kim, Vinh Long, Cai Mon and My Khanh in Tien Giang
From September to November is the flooding season. Choosing this time for traveling, you will witness the water overflowing fields. This season is not really perfect to go sightseeing this; but if you can travel in flooding days, quite a lot interesting things will be waiting for you. Having a trip in the Mekong Delta in the flooding season, you should not miss the following destinations including Tan Lap floating village in Long An; Tra Su indigo forest, Bung Binh Thien and Ta Pa field in An Giang; Tram Chim national park in Dong Thap and Thi Tuong lagoon in Ca Mau.
From December to February of Lunar calendar is around Tet holiday. Coming to the Mekong Delta on this occasion, you should visit famous villages such as Sa Dec, Tan Quy Dong and Vi Thanh.
